Can we uncover change of direction hidden movement patterns to support ACL injury prevention in football?
Within the "CUT the ACL" project, we analysed >1,000 young football players and >6000 90° change-of-direction (COD) trials. Using unsupervised machine learning on over 50 metrics per trial, we were able to identify distinct biomechanical traits - phenotypes - during the 90° cut.
Four phenotypes emerged, defined by two key dimensions: movement control and force exerted on the ground. Players with poor movement control, in the presence of high impact forces (Low Control - High Force phenotype) or low (Low Control - Low Force phenotype) impact forces could be placed at risk of sustaining an ACL injury, potentially with different mechanisms.
📉Combining movement quality and force profiles may help clinicians identify individual needs and tailor neuromuscular training strategies.
🔬 Which COD phenotype do your players belong to?
