The history of Isokinetic begins in 1986 when Dr. Stefano Della Villa, a young physician specializing in physiatrics at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna, learned of a new method for assessing and training muscle strength, known as ‘isokinetics.’
Driven by a keen interest in this new method, he spends some time in the United States, where the method originated, to learn the use and functioning of the equipment used with it. It is during these months that he comes into contact with Professor Michael Dillingham, Director of Sports Medicine at Stanford University and team doctor for the San Francisco 49ers football team, and his trusted therapist, Rick Eagleston.
Upon returning to Italy, Dr. Della Villa decided to put the vast wealth of culture and knowledge he had gathered in the United States into practice. In August 1987, he and his colleague, Dr. Gianni Nanni, opened the first Isokinetic Center in Bologna.
It’s just the beginning of a story that continues to this day.
