A disc herniation is a spine condition in which the nucleus pulposus (the core of the disc) is displaced from the intervertebral space. Injuries to the discs can occur due to repetitive stresses over time or due to a higher-energy traumatic event. .
Spinal stenosis is a condition of the spine canal that occurs when the spinal cord, the neural
system that passes through the spinal canal, gets compressed due to a narrowing of the
spinal spaces. This narrowing can be either congenital or happening over time.
The vertebrae present a canal in their posterior part in which the neural system passes through and innervates different structures to allow sensation and movements. Due to the spinal bone’s high resilience, these injuries are typically due to high-energy traumatic events in young and healthy populations, such as motor vehicle accidents.
Spondylolysis is a unilateral or bilateral bony defect of a specific structure located in the posterior aspect of the vertebra (named pars interarticularis), often considered to be a stress fracture. Due to the damage reported to that structure, the vertebra can slip forward, in that case, the medical term is spondylolisthesis.
Low back pain is an umbrella term that includes multiple conditions with or without an apparent cause of the pain. Low back pain is one of the most debilitating conditions worldwide and almost everybody experienced an episode of pain in their back in a lifetime.
Thoracic back pain is an umbrella term that includes multiple conditions with or without an apparent cause of the pain. Thoracic back pain is not as common as low back pain and can affect any type of individual, from athletes to the general population. Likewise for low back pain, thoracic pain is multifactorial, and it is not always attributable to a specific cause, such as a traumatic event or an overuse injury.
