Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint condition typically developed over the years characterised by a progressive loss of articular cartilage. Hip OA is typically classified as primary when the condition is developed without any specific underlying causes, and secondary as a consequence of a progressive joint overload or due to previous injuries. The type, severity and frequency of symptoms reported by patients can significantly vary among individuals. Due to the nature of the condition itself, if not correctly addressed, symptoms tend to progressively get worse. Patients affected by this pathology typically report a reduced range of motion, stiffness, swelling, and generalised pain, typically as a consequence of prolonged periods of inactivity or excessive activity. The first-line treatment for hip OA is typically non-surgical, based on containing the symptoms and addressing the potential factors that have contributed to the development of the condition through an array of different interventions (e.g.: education, rehabilitation, injections, etc). Surgical options are usually reserved for patients who have not responded positively to non-surgical management and in cases where the pathology is more advanced.
In more severe cases, when the symptoms cannot be controlled through conservative management, patients can be referred to a surgeon for a surgical opinion. Thanks to our excellent relationships with Orthopaedic Surgeons, in case it is necessary, you will be promptly referred to one of our trusted contacts for a surgical opinion. Different procedures (such as hip replacement, osteotomy and hip resurfacing, etc.) could be implemented and are always discussed in detail with the patients and the medical-surgical team before proceeding with the operation. Regardless of the applied surgical procedure, rehabilitation plays a fundamental role after the operation. Our strong advice is to commence rehabilitation as soon as allowed by the surgeon as malpractices and lack of optimal rehabilitation in the early-stage post-surgery can significantly impact long-term outcomes. Here at Isokinetic, thanks to our specialised medical team, we can support your recovery process from immediately after surgery to the return to your desired activities.
