Cryotherapy uses low temperatures for therapeutic purposes. After injury or surgery, swelling often occurs but can be reduced by applying cold packs.
The most significant effect of cryotherapy is vasoconstriction, when the blood vessels narrow, which reduces bleeding and inflammation. Low temperatures also influence the nerve endings, reducing their excitability and inducing temporary numbness.
Gel packs are used for larger joints, whereas ice massage is used for smaller joints, inflammatory tendinitis and bursitis.
