A disc herniation is a spinal condition in which the nucleus pulposus (the core of the disc) is displaced from the intervertebral space. Injuries to the discs can occur due to repetitive stresses over time or due to a higher-energy traumatic event.
The cervical spine is particularly important as it has the double function of protecting the neural system that innervates the entire body and additionally allowing high degrees of mobility. For this reason, cervical spinal fractures are dangerous, and typically happen as a result of abnormal high excursion movements, or due to an impact, such as a fall or a motor vehicle accident.
Whiplash Associated Disorders, commonly known as whiplash, is an umbrella term that includes several conditions characterised by a sudden acceleration/deceleration movement, often reported at the cervical area. This injury is commonly reported in motor vehicle accidents, where the cervical spine hyperextends and hyperflexes in a very short amount of time.
Neck stiffness, also known as nuchal rigidity, is an umbrella term typically used to describe a medical condition that is characterised by decreased mobility of the cervical area, often accompanied by discomfort when turning the head and a general reduced functioning that can impact physical and daily living activities. Sometimes this condition may be correlated to a specific event, such as a motor vehicle accident, or more commonly when waking up after sleeping in an unusual position, however, neck stiffness is multifactorial, and it is not always attributable to a particular cause. Several factors can lead to this condition, such as poor posture, weakness, a sedentary lifestyle, but also high-intensity activities, and excessive strain on the neck.
The trapezius is a large trapezoid-shaped muscle of our upper body, which spans from the occipital bone (base of the head) to the shoulder blades, and to the lower thoracic vertebrae, covering around half of our back. Its functions are related to controlling and stabilising the scapula and neck in conjunction with other muscles.
Neck pain, also known as cervicalgia, is an umbrella term that includes multiple conditions with or without an apparent cause of the pain. Neck pain is multifactorial, and it is not always attributable to a specific cause, such as a traumatic event or an overuse injury. Several potential risk factors have been studied in the development of neck pain, including lack of mobility, weakness, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, but also high-intensity activities, and excessive strain on the neck.
