Chronic lower back pain is a catch-all term that can refer to a wide variety of conditions, from the degeneration of intervertebral discs, to sciatica and cruralgia, as well as other conditions affecting the intervertebral discs and their inner nucleus.
Due to the complexities of these conditions, they are often hard to diagnose and harder to treat. However, our sports medicine doctors have years of experience diagnosing these injuries and our physiotherapists are well-trained to treat chronic back pain.
Patients should be aware that curing lingering pain like this can be a lengthy process in itself. Work in our sports rehab gyms and hydrotherapy are crucial in curing back pain in the long-term.
Chronic lower back pain – Rehabilitation
Depending on the cause that determines the back pain, the patient may suffer acute pain as a result of an effort or trauma, which is accentuated with the respiratory movements. Typically there is always a muscular contraction of the dorsal paravertebral.
The first goal of the rehabilitation program is therefore the reduction of pain and contracture which is obtained through the use of physical therapies (TENS, laser hyperthermia, moist heat, ultrasound) but especially with the de-contracting massage therapy for back and paraspinal lumbar, rhomboid and trapezes. At the same time it is necessary to perform the stretching of these muscles that are usually hypertonic and retracted and a global postural correction of the spine flawed by incorrect attitudes acquired over time.
After the disappearance of pain, the rehabilitative program focuses on the aerobic activities permitted (walking, elliptical, top xt) and the recovery of abdominal muscle stabilizers (transverse), shoulder and back muscles which are strongly deficit (deltoid, trapezius, biceps, triceps, latissimus dorsi, rhomboids) with the aim to shorten the front and the back stretch.
The treatment protocol ends with the last phase on the field with exercises for proprioceptive rehabilitation and unstable supports (tablets, Bobath balls, obstacles) and exercises for the technical fundamentals of the sport to allow a safe and early recovery of practiced sports.
