Injuries to the knee are amongst the most common sports-related injuries, with prevelance in football particularly high. These injuries can result in a prolonged abscence from competition, in some cases ending careers and also in several consequences in later years. This illustrates the continuing need to develop successful Sports Medicine strategies which are shared for the benefit of all athletes.
The XXI Conference on Sports Rehabilitation and Traumatology focused exclusively on the knee of the football player and was designed to consider the most common challenges presented to football players and their support teams.
Recent data from scientific literature indicates that there is a strong need to protect the health of both female and male football players, at all levels, as well as to promote football as a health-enhancing leisure activity. This is the mission of the FIFA F-MARC, and our conference contributed to this mission.
The conference featured world-leading speakers covering many different areas of expertise. They outlined management strategies for knee injuries, defined at each stage of the injury continuum; from injury prevention, through surgery and rehabilitation. The discussions at the conference also focused on orthopaedic experiences gathered outside the world of football, that are relevant in managing knee injuries of actual, and former football players.
As with other years, the conference was an opportunity for discussion and a chance to share ideas and experiences. We thank all those who were in attendance and made this event so useful.
Football Medicine Strategies for Knee Injuries was attended by more than 1,100 delegates from over 65 different countries.
