Functional bandaging is used as a protective, dynamic restraint. Using an appropriate combination of extensible and inextensible adhesive bandages, individual muscle-tendon and ligament structures can be isolated and immobilised without limiting the patient’s natural joint articulation.
The dynamic properties of immobilisation through functional bandaging are:
– Mechanical action
– Exteroceptive action (patch effect)
– Physiological action
– Proprioceptive action
This treatment is usually used in cases of capsular ligament disorders (like sprains and dislocations), muscle injuries and tendon disorders.
