The vertebral column, also known as the spine, is a complex structure of our body which is part of the axial skeleton, constituting the central part of our body. The spine is composed of 33 smaller units called vertebrae, 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 4 coccygeal. The vertebrae present a canal in their posterior part in which the neural system passes through and innervates different structures to allow sensation and movements. Due to the spinal bone’s high resilience, these injuries are typically due to high-energy traumatic events in young and healthy populations, such as motor vehicle accidents. In older populations, or in subjects affected by specific conditions that make the bone more fragile (e.g.: osteoporosis), spinal fractures can happen also with low-energy mechanisms such as a fall. Due to the different injury mechanisms, the area of the injury and the patient characteristics, significantly different symptomatology can be reported. Multiple classification systems exist to evaluate the best treatment intervention based on spinal stability and potential neurological dysfunctions. Aside from collecting data from the injury mechanisms and performing a physical assessment of the patient, an imaging examination (e.g.: x-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc.) is required to optimally visualise the fracture specifics. <\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Depending on the severity of the injury, significantly different treatment strategies can be implemented in the management of vertebral fractures. Because of their high-energy trauma mechanisms, patients with severe vertebral<\/strong> fractures <\/strong>are typically evaluated by primary care physicians whose key function is to assess the need for surgical stabilization. Some vertebral fractures (for example: small, stable fractures that do not significantly impair the person’s function) can be managed conservatively with rehabilitation, pharmacological intervention, and potentially bracing. If surgical treatment is deemed necessary, different procedures can be implemented according to the patient’s needs, which are always discussed between the patient and the medical-surgical staff. At Isokinetic, after being carefully examined by one of our specialized physicians and receiving an accurate diagnosis, your recovery process will be structured in different phases and will take place in four different environments: the pool, the gymnasium, the movement analysis room, and the field. In the initial stages, the main goal of rehabilitation is to minimize injury-related symptoms. Recovery of mobility and muscle activation always progress with respect to maintaining spinal stability. In the intermediate phase of rehabilitation, recovery of core and upper\/lower extremity strength and stability becomes the priority, along with optimizing the overall quality of movement to learn how to effectively distribute load among different structures (back, hip, knee) during daily life and sports activities.
