Neck pain, also known as cervicalgia, is an umbrella term that includes multiple conditions with or without an apparent cause of the pain. Neck pain is multifactorial, and it is not always attributable to a specific cause, such as a traumatic event or an overuse injury. Several potential risk factors have been studied in the development of neck pain, including lack of mobility, weakness, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, but also high-intensity activities, and excessive strain on the neck. Patients can experience significantly different symptoms from minimal to severe pain, stiffness, neural symptoms (e.g.: tingling, burning, weakness, etc.), and other conditions (e.g.: dizziness, nausea, headache, etc.). Aside from collecting data from the patient\u2019s past injury history and performing a physical assessment, an imaging examination is often prescribed in case of suspected structural injuries. It is important to underline that the presence of anatomical abnormalities of the spine detected through imaging is not necessarily related to the symptoms experienced by the patient and that false positives are common. Based on the severity of the condition, significantly different treatment strategies can be implemented in the management of this condition. Conservative treatment is typically the first line of treatment, consisting of rehabilitation, education, and pharmacological intervention (e.g.: medications, injections, etc.). In more severe cases when surgical treatment is deemed necessary, several different procedures can be implemented based on the patient\u2019s needs and are always discussed between the patient and the medical-surgical staff. In the early stages, the main goal of the rehabilitation is to minimise your symptoms. Mobility recovery and muscle activation are typically progressed together with the optimisation of your posture. In the mid-stage of rehabilitation, neck and upper limb strength and stability recovery become the priority, together with the enhancement of your general movement quality to learn how to optimally coordinate neck and upper body movements.
